  • Is anyone selling bobbin brackets for winders?

I have seen fellas who machined or had one machined - with a universal recess that would fit strat or tele styles and had a top piece with a recess for the poles. And this all tightened onto the bobbin through the center-hole, I think. I am interested in buying one for my winder, so I can get away from the tape and whatnot.

In lieu of an actual bracket, if you have the CAD file; I may be willing to buy that instead, or work out a trade. Can anyone help out or point me in the right direction, please?

Man, it's a hard knock life out there for a winder...

What I would suggest is that you just use a free CAD tool like "Sketch Up" (or even do it by hand with paper, ruler and pencil for that matter) and draw up what you want, then look up a machine shop in the area where you live and ask them how much. You may find that it won't cost you that much.

That would work, too. Something, anything, other than double-sided tape - would make me happy. That actually looks easier to make than what I had seen somewhere and described.

Bruce Johnson will do those for you. I could too but I got too much on my plate right now.
Get a disc not a bar.

I used a bar for years, why is a disk better, maybe more surface to mount on?

I have a disk on my other winder. I like the bar as it has less mass for the winder motor to deal with and if you machine it to some fairly tight tolerances, it has virtually zero vibration as well.

You are seriously kidding here when you imply you don't know how to type the name "Bruce Johnson" into that little box up in the top right corner just to the left of the little magnifying glass right?

Also at the top of the page is a community tab.
Under the community dropdown tab is a members list.
Rob is still new and learning his way around the forum.
Push a few buttons and look around a bit.
The search tool is a valuable tool, and will answer many questions.
                    Good Luck,

Bruce may be busy this week. He makes a lot of instrument necks for other companies besides his own line.
The round faceplates are less likely to snag your wire or your knuckles at 2000 RPM. You can also mill the profiles for 3 different bobbins at 120º increments on each side so that you aren't constantly changing faceplates.

I got in touch with the guy; say, you wouldnt happen to have your CAD file for that faceplate, would you? Sure would help out.

Robert. I don't use CAD so I can't help you there. First you would need to decide who's bobbins and flatwork you are going to use and send the samples to the machine shop so they can get it right. I think most folks around here use Mojomusicalsupply or make their own. Many vendors will have DWG files of their parts available though accuracy isn't always guaranteed.

I've been using double sided tape since about 2005!

For Fender types I made a holder from wood, that mounts to the winder and uses a screw to hold the bobbins.

My new winder is going to be different though.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
