While this is OK for yarn, I'd worry that this would damage magnet wire. There were some postings on just this issue.

Yeah, I tried a series of polished steel posts in a zig-zag arrangement and every coil I wound had internal shorts because the posts were wearing the enamel off the wire. Dumb idea.

I know it may damage the wire but Tom has made his pickups this way for more than 15 years always using yarm tensioners.
