    I have a feature on my winder that allows me to quick stop it. If I don't turn down the speed control before resetting that button, it will jump to the previous speed. I have done this several times and the wire has survived a 0-500 or higher rpm start no problem. You just have to use proper pressure. 300 RPM is not that high and I think you could manage it if you had to.
