  • Is red Fasel Inductor cool?

Mr. Crybaby has red Fasel. Cool or bogus?

Does it sound good? If yes, it's cool.

The red Fasels sound good. Truth be told, IMO the black inductors that come in most of the current Dunlop pedals are the best sounding inductors they've come out with since the TDK's used in the Thomas Organ version. It only took them about 5 tries to get 'em right!

The reason the "old" Fasels sounded so good was due to a "happy accident". The material used for the magnetic core back then was a cheap one, so it sported some residual magnetization, due to being lightly DC biased ( see circuit ). This caused the inductor to behave asymmetrically ( it saturated earlier on the positive half of the waveform ) and to introduce some even harmonics ( ferrite cores don't behave like this, so "modern" inductors sound "harsher" due to the presence of odd harmonics ).

For a deeper insight, I encourage you to read the excellent R.G. Keen's article about the Wah's technology, which can be found at his site.

        Hope this helps

        Best regards

        Bob
