  • Triode power?

    Hi all- new member here.
I was searching for a plan to build a low to mid powered (5-20W) amp using old audio triodes ie 2a3, or type 26/27/56/76 etc. I have built a couple of tweed amps and some effects pedals, so I have some basic skill but certainly am not very knowledgable about electronics. I assume there are a lot of weird factors that would go into such a project, but if a well known layout exists, I am interested in trying it. From what I have read, you can get some interesting distorted tones from it, though clean power is tough to get.
I searched the forum but didn't find too much, maybe I missed something (likely).
Any thoughts or advice? Seems like an interesting way to get something different (maybe in a crappy way) and learn more about this stuff.

I don't think anyone's ever done it. Pentodes and beam tetrodes are cheaper because audiophiles drive the price of triodes up, and they sound better for guitar than triodes anyway.

If you do want to try it: Triodes are very forgiving of load impedance, so almost any output transformer you can lay hands on should do something or other. (try a Marshall 18 watt OPT with 2A3s?) They need no negative feedback, so that makes things simpler.

On the other hand, they require more bias voltage and grid drive than the usual guitar amp tubes.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

...I've seen a couple boutique small-power triode guitar amplifers on the web.

...GOOGLE "triode guitar amp" to see what's been tried.
