Pickups - do these work

This is going to sound overly simple but I'm new to guitar electronics. I have a multimeter, how can I tell if some old pickups I bought for a few bucks surplus are working? I figured it would be a good way to get started learning.

Set your meter to read ohms on the kohm scale. Read the hot to ground on the pickup wires. You should get a reading from 4K to 12K depending on the type of pickup.

You can also just hook up the wires to a plug and plug them into an amp. Then tap the covers with a screwdriver to see if you get any sound.
