Your kid sounds like me! I underestimated your sons experience. I have a friend who is in a very similar situation to your son, multi-instrumentalist been playing since he was about 10 and is now 19, recently bought a SVT and I had a go at him for it. I just don't think its needed. I tend to buy old cheap equipment so i can change it to what I want, and that works for me. Teaches me a lot about playing, building, designing and a host of other things.
I get the impression that your son buys what he wants, and just gets down to the nitty gritty of playing and I gather that works for him.
