  • Camco Vortex 6 amp, need some direction on fix

    Hello,

I happened to find a broken Camco Vortex 6 amp at my university's surplus sale for pretty cheap and figured it would be worth a shot to fix myself. I have a little bit of electronics knowledge but am not very confident in my knowledge or skills, no where near understanding and being able to trouble shoot this amp myself, but i am more then willing to poke around if i get some direction to go in.

This amp is extremely high powered pro audio amp, rated at 6600 watts rms bridged utilizing a switching power supply and class-H amp stage. It is designed and built in Germany with, from what i can find, no dealers in the us and for the life of me i cannot find any discussion or in-depth look into this amp. let alone a circuit diagram.

    What I have found:
internally I cannot see any burnt or damaged components. there are two barrel fuses near the mains power input, one blows (16A) after say .5 seconds of being plugged in to the wall. No lights on the front as it even happens when the power switch is off. What would this lead you to think?

I can get pics of the internals if it would help.

Chances are I will take it to someone to fix, but am hoping i can find it myself and get it going again.

Very little details and I am a new guy (i understand), This seems like a great community and just looking for some direction on what to look for and / or how much it might cost to repair if i cannot do it myself.

    Peace,
    Steve

    Hello Steve,

Do you still have this amp? Did you ever get it to work?

I do still have it but have not fixed it yet. I have not put too much effort into fixing it yet but am hopeful for either passing it off to someone that has the time for repairing it and sell or use it.

          Oooh, perfect.

Welcome to the forum, both of you.

If this were a 100 or 200 watt amp[ like an old Peavey or something, fixing it without schematics would be fairly easy. Switching supply and 6000 watts means this is not simple at all. You two getting together sopunds like a good idea.

To fix this, most parts still look the same when they die. BLowing large fuese? Start checking for shorted powr semiconductors. Check the main switchimg transistors in the power supply, and check for shorted outputs on the channels
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
