help me out with a name please

hi all, I have just dismantled my sony 5 disc changer after it failed to play the cds.

I believe i have tracked the fault to a ribbon/ tape type connector strip, now I dont know the proper name for this tape and would really like some advice from you guys,

the cd player is a sony CDP 322M (quite old now) 5 discs on a rotating tray that moves out horizontaly.

the connector is maked up E66085 AWM 2896 80C vw-1 BANDO-S and is a strip of flat flexible plastic about as thick as a sheet of paper about 110mm long and 10mm wide with 5 conductors in it side by side.

any body tell me what this stuff is called please?

Did you try Googling "AWM 2896 80C"
It is called flat ribbon cable.
This type of cabling sucks!
It is really difficult to find exact repacements.
Number of conductors, length, pitch between conductors.
I thing Allied Electronics carries a few of them.

I did look on google but got lots of random returns, I also tried RS components but just got lots of computer ribbon type stuff.
I have done a make do repair for the moment by desoldering the plugs for the ribbon and using thin wire, dont know how many times the tray will open and close before it goes wrong again but at least it works.

by the way, do you have any idea which part of the numbers refers to what for this ribbon?

i.e. a code for type, voltage ,size, conductor No. or is this stuff just random?

Flat Flex Cable, FFC for short. It's usually custom made for the particular piece of equipment it's used in.

Not all of the codes on that cable assembly are the part number.
AWM = Association of Wire Makers or some such
VW-1 = flammability rating
80C = max rated operating temperature
BANDO = maker's name

that leaves E66085 and 2896.

Digikey sell some pre-made ones, which I've used for connecting LCD panels.

Yes, they are likely made custom for the OEM, Sony probably didn't buy the ribbons from Farnell.

Verify it has continuity for each conductor or not.

If it truly is defective, then it may be possible to order the exact thing from Sony. However, I might be looking for old thrown-away consumer audio stuff that might have a ribbon inside you could use. And if you need a five conductor ribbon and can find one with eight, then careful work with a sharp blade can trim one down.
