  • Ampex 351

Not sure if you guys are familiar with the inside of one of these, but maybe someone can help me.

I recently bought an Ampex 351 transport/amp console from a friend in Memphis. It was used to record some hits from the 60's (Harold Dorman's "Mountain of Love", and Travis Wammack's "Scratchy" among others.) Anyways, the unit powers up fine, the amp lights up and the VU meter apparently senses the dirty pot of the "record level." The capstan motor turns as well when I move the safety arm. BUT none of the controls (rewind, stop, play, forward, or record) seem to control anything. I can't get the pinch roller to move or the tables to turn.

Anybody familiar with these machines? Anybody got any ideas on what I'm doing wrong (user failure? lol) or what?

    Thanks!

One of these files says "manual", it's a big file, not sure if it is service or operators manual.
    Index of /ampex/manuals/audio/351man
The transport schem. shows some jumpers, maybe missing?
