• Peavey KB-60 problem

I was given this amp quite awhile ago. Channel 1 inputs weren't working. Around the time I received the amp I also started going to school for electronics. At the time I didn't see anything wrong with it. I now have some electronics knowledge in my brain and have pulled it out to have another look at it. I found numerous cracked solder joints (especially on channel 1) I fixed those and still no sound when I plug into the inputs of channel 1. I also noticed loud popping and cracks coming from the speaker when I turn some of the pots. Any suggestions? Even with school I am still lacking experience, so bare with me. Many thanks.

Welcome to the world of Fun.
I have attached the schematic.
Follow the signal path from the input & see just where it stops.
The crackling pots is a common enough problem.
They get dirty, sticky. They need to be cleaned/ lubed.
DeOxit is a good electronic cleaner.
Spray in a SMALL amount & rotate the pot knob back & forth.
It is made by Caig.
The big distributors carry it. Mouser, Allied Electronic, Digikey, MCM.
It is not cheap.
$25.00 a can.
I have even seen it at Radio Shack. They carry it in a much smaller dispenser.
For what it is worth, having the main board out, I would touch up the solder on the whole board.
Of coarse, I am a nit picker.

Thank You! I can't see any attachments though. That's O.K. I already have the schematic. I did what you said (I should have already known this, lol) I found two broken solder traces. No voltage was getting to R119. The trace right beside it (C108 to R118) is also broken. I haven't jumped the traces yet. When I do I'll let you know what happens. Undoubtedly this is the problem.

I already re-flowed a bunch of solder (I had the same thoughts as you) if I get ambitious I will do the rest.

I will look into cleaning the pots.

There is a 50k pot in the equalizer section (VR102) that has the shaft broken and the knob missing. I found a replacement online for $4.95. If anyone knows a good place to find these cheaper that would be great. I will have to contact Peavey for the knob.

Once I get this all done the amp will be like new.

Thanks.

Peavevy will sell you any part for their amplifiers, CALL the parts department there.

Do you have the pot part number? Should be on the schematic. Pots have a number format like 71190543, or just 7119xxxx, look on the old part. SOmetimes it just has the last three numbers, so 71190543 becomes #543.

And if you have the complete schematic, it includes a parts list.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

One of my professors gave the schematic. I don't have the parts list your talking about. The pot did have a number (71190511) on the PCB layout sheet he gave me. That's how I found the replacement pot. I will contact Peavey and see what I can get.

Thanks for the reply.
OOps! For those who may be following this I have attached the schematic above.
Peavey has zero stock.
I have tried.
Your best bet is maybe EBay.
I have seen groups of them from time to time.

The scope shows everything work good now. I will plug in the speaker and see what's up. Thanks to you all!
