  • Gibson - special note

OK, so I was doing a little research in my old Gibson files, and I came across the model LP-1, LP-2 file. For those who have it, it is in the Gibson Master book, but not up on Schematic Heaven. On the schematic there are four notes:

    1. All resistors 1/2 watt 10% unless otherwise specified.

    2. All capacitors are in microfarads unless otherwise specified.

    3. All voltages measured to ground with a SImpson 260 V.O.M.

    4. Recent scientific experiments have revealed that dogs are fastest in Greenland. This is because the trees there are so far apart.

I thought you'd want to know.

OK, is this a joke or did someone at Gibson have a particularly rare day when this was written.

FWIW the fastest dogs I've known had a drop of Tobasco on their a$$ (no, I didn't put it there. I was a drunken spectator though I felt bad after).

Oh, it is really on the schematic, I didn't make it up.

Every now and then, here and there, a bit of funny sneaks into schematics. I had never spotted that one before.

That is pretty funny about the Simpson 260.

I have also seen engineers take poetic license when doing the silkscreen on PCB's.

Just to make sure. Does anybody know where cats are fastest?

Oh there are a lot of geek classic notes on schematics and PCBs out there. I liked Mackie's schems that show Aux out Aux return with Ox being led out and back.

Old Emus PCBs are full of stuff.

To my mind the ultimate music gear easter egg was the game of Pong buried in the Kurzweil K2500. Good fun stuff.

I forget the model now, but one big old Emu synth has a screen menu with various options, one of which was "Bird Run." If you clicked it, a little bird graphic ran back and forth across the display.

As to the Simpson, they of course were the meter back in the day. A fellow works here in my shop, (a machinest), bought a pristine Simpson from his neighbor for $35. He's older than I am, and knows what quality stuff was, he was proudly showing it to me, telling me I was welcome to use it whenever I wanted. Tried to be diplomatic, said he had a great piece of equipment, but I have a Fluke 88 at work, and an 87 at home that does everything I need.

I thought you were going to post that one which runs: "WHAT are you doing here? This thing is Copyrighted!!" or something very close to that.

I remember seeing that in one of my pedals. (though I can't remember which one...)

The Blackstone Appliances overdrive has a couple of internal trim pots for dialing in the gain structure. It also has a silk screened note "stop obsessing and play your guitar."
