  • Question about a Peavey CS 800

I am not certain that this is the right place for this question, but here goes...
I am in the process of building a rack setup for my guitar. As of now I have a preamp, a power conditioner, a rack tuner and an eq. I have been using a crate head as my power amp since I don't have a proper rack mounted one yet. I have a chance to get a CS 800 for really cheap and am considering using this as an interim solution. I know it is not intended for this application and i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on the matter or alert me to any problems I may run into. Thanks.

Well... It's going to be a big heavy PITA to carry around, and way more powerful than you need.

It may also sound a bit "duller" than a tube amp might, but you could probably make up for it by turning up the treble on the EQ.

Oh and the fan noise if you're trying to play quietly. Apart from that it should be fine. Especially if you're playing the kind of music that a rack setup implies.

Oh, it will work OK, but like Steve says, it is overkill. Like driving a huge cement mixer to do grocery shopping. (Though that might be good for LARGE tossed salads...)

Driving to the store in a cement truck would be a pretty "metal" thing to do. However, buying salad wouldn't.

Life is like that, we are faced with choices every day. Paper bag or plastic? Regular or decaffeinated? Salad or cement truck?

Thanks guys.. I am aware that it is total overkill but i figured that once i get a power amp that is actually meant for a guitar the 800 will probably become a back-up in our PA system. Anyway, I appreciate the help. Thanks much!
