  • Can anyone ID this old pickup

I am hoping that somone will be able to ID this pickup for me.

I have been searching the web but could not match it up.

It has been fitted into a 1962 Gibson L7C guitar. Which is as I bought it more than 30 years ago
So the pickup must be dated from around the late 70's maybe early 80's ??

    If this information assists you......

No stampings or markings other than 3 initials hand written in what looks like a black felt pen "GPB or GRB or CPB or CRB" . Can’t see anymore without wrecking the P-up.

The thin transculent paper looks similar to that used by paper capacitor manufacturers.

The glue packs the windings into the pressed gold plated cover, which was very cleanly welded in the corners prior to plating. It looks like early manufacturing. Very neat.

There are 2 x separate rough sand cast strip magnets 2.25” long under windings. Like the early alnico bars.

The screws pass through the split between the 2 magnets.

Looks very much like a early P90, but gold plated

Cheers and hoping someone can throw some light on it.

It actually is a stock pickup:
P-90 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "dog eared" version of the P-90, which may have been slightly modified to ground the pole pieces it looks like.

Hi & thanks for your response. Yes, thought it was a P90.....
What do you mean a by a "stock" pickup ? Just what everyone carried in the basic pickup range ?
Do you have any idea what brand or who the maker may have been ?

      Thanks again.

"Stock" would mean the pickup that came in the guitar. Which I don't think it is. It's a P90 type pickup to be certain. But the flat screw heads are unusual. I haven't seen that before on any Gibson pickup. Since there weren't any custom pickup makers to speak of when that pickup was made I have to guess it's a P90 knockoff that someone took from a different brand of guitar. Though as you mention, the work looks good. So it's almost impossible to say who made that pickup. Unless someone recognizes it.
