I guess that this is too late but did you try plugging in the line out cable only partway? A lot of mixers that will allow you to tap off the signal without interrupting the circuit (the wiring of the jack suggests that inserting a mono cable to the 1st click would have left the speaker on.) If that didn't work another option would be to connect pins 4 & 5 to a mini-toggle switch so that you have the speaker off when using headphones but on when using it as a line out.

1) no, no extra risk of electric shock because of this mod.
Anyway you must always connect your amp to a properly grounded outlet.
2) the only possible error would be to mis identify the jack legs and short the power amp output or something, but it looks like it did not happen.
3) *maybe* some contact shorts the current feedback resistor when in "headphone mode" to make it less buzzy, this would change somewhat the sound through the speaker.
Just an educated guess, of course.

There is a problem here.
We do not have the actual schematic, it's a lot of blind guessing.
We are *assuming* the 30XL headphone out is the same as in 15XL, not necessarily so.
So far we got lucky, we might mess things in a bad way.
Anyway *most* (99%) small modern headphones are tinny buzzy, just too small, so we are swimming against the river.
Try a couple good "cup" headphones, the ones who envelope and seal all around your ears or go for good in-ear ones.
I simply do not provide earphone jacks on my amps just for that reason.
My answer?: "just turn it down and play at low volume ... through the speaker".Juan Manuel Fahey
