  • Do I need a pre-amp with a clip-on mic?

I'm planning on putting a clip-on mic inside a guitar. Yes, I know, it will probably sound terrible. But would I need a pre-amp? Would the output be about the same as a regular guitar pickup?

Sorry, forgot I already posted this! Can someone delete please? Thanks!

I've got a small clip-on condenser mic and the output is still lower than an acoustic guitar pickup. If it's one with an internal battery you'll need to be able to retrieve the mic to change it. Feedback and handling noise may be a problem. Why not just plug it into your amp and check the output?

You may have more success with piezo disks and a single-FET preamp. Needs careful EQ but surprisingly good when you get it right. And really cheap.
