Found this schem online for producing +9V and -9V from a 555 timer, have a question: For each output, are Caps C5 & C6 correctly located in series with the rectifier diode pairs (D1, D2/D3, D4), or should they be connected directly to ground from the outputs of each diode pair, as in my alternate schem?

You have not changed C5 & C6, they are both connected to ground in both drawings. You have changed D1 & D4.
The original circuit is correct, it is using the voltage doubler principle.

Thanks for the clarification. I know C5 and C6 were still connected to ground, but I was unsure about C5 being in series between D1/D2, and C6 in series between D3/D4.
