  • Help with a schematic!

    I recently was given a bass by a friend as he no longer wanted it, when I plugged it in I realised it had a grounding issue. When I opened it up I discovered a mess of wires and deciding this didn't look right I went searching for a schematic. My gut feeling was right and it is wired up in an utterly bizarre way and I plan to re wire it as the schematic suggests. Here is, however, where I have an issue, I haven't used a schematic before and have a few questions hopefully someone will be able to answer.

    Here is the schematic in question, what I am wondering is do the numbers proceeded by a "n" refer to capacitors? If so, I'm quite confused as to how I connect it all to the volume pot.

    "N" stands for nanofarad. They started using this in the last few years(to MY dismay). To get uF from nano, move decimal three places to left. Output of the cap junction goes to the wiper(center) and one end of the pot goes to ground, the other goes to the tip connection on the jack. Mike.

      So do I connect the two caps directly to the volume pot? Or do I connect them before?

        Easiest way is to connect the two caps to the two tone controls and then just connect the two free ends to the wiper of the volume pot.

            That schem shows the hot from pickup going IN to the wiper and the cap on the end of the pot. You have the hot going into the end of the pot and the cap on the wiper to ground.

              The three decimal places then means that 1000pf is 1nf.

                  standard cap values are in microFarads, commonly drawn as uF (since the 'micron' symbol looks kinda like a lowercase u). Micro = 10 to the -6 power, or 1/1000000

                  nanoFarads are 10 to the -9, or three decimal places over (smaller). 1000nF = 1uF, so 0.01uF = 10nF
                  sometimes the 'F' is implicit, so a cap might be 10n or .01u and it is the same cap.

                  The stock wiring schem is kinda bizarre in itself. JBLtwin is right, review the way the pots are called out in the schem vs the way they are shown on your drawing. the wipers (middle pin on most pots) should NOT be going to ground. Also (I almost always am wrong the first go 'round, and have to resolder) be sure of pot rotation and which way is "up", that is to say, 10, on the pot before making the hot side/ground side connections.

                    Thanks, yeah I think I'm ok with that part of it now. Just struggling with which bit to wire where!

                        It looks like the original Hofner schematic(PDF) has the tone controls wired wrong. The pickup lead should go to the top contact and the capacitor to the wiper(center contact).
                        OOps.. just looked at your sketch ... yeah, that should work fine.

                            The tone controls don't use all three contacts. Just the center and the top contact. You want the wiper to move to the side that the pickup is on when the control is turned down.
