  • Pickup ohms issue

I just have a quick question, and maybe someone would be able to answer. I know similar things have been asked, but I can;t really seem to find any answers. I used some Elektrisola 42AWG Solderable Polyurethane to wind a pickup, but after soldering the lead wires and connecting to a multimeter, it shows the resistance/continuity as 1 (no connection). I am certain there was not a break in the wind. Does the copper wire being soldered need to be stripped before soldering the leads? or anything else that might be going on/need checked? Thanks!

I know it is not the multimeter, because another pickup works, but this one for some reason does not have any reading.

There is insulation on the wire.
It must be stripped back before soldering.

It depends on what type of pickup bobbin you're winding on how the wire is connected to the bobbin.
On a Fender type pickup, you wrap the wire around the eyelet and solder.
On a gibson type pickup, use a 28 gauge connection wire.
For gibson style, strip the insulation from the 28 gauge connection, & tin the ends with solder.
Then wrap the 42 poly around the pre-tinned 28 gauge, and solder.
If you are using ROHS solder, you may have trouble getting the solder to stick.
Also the MEF has a Beginner/Hobbyist pickup forum Area you may want to check on?

Thanks for the quick replies. It is a single coil. I thought the insulation would be removed in soldering, but I will desolder it and try to strip the wire this evening, and I will for sure check out that section of the form a bit more, thanks!

desoldering and stripping it worked great. One more question though, if thats ok. What do you guys usually do if your wire breaks at the eyelet (mainly for the positive since it can't be wound back to make it longer easily)? I just spliced it with another piece, but now there is a solder joint. Is there a different method?
