  • Large balding hairy male seeking female 1/8" / 3.5 mm stereo jack with long bushing

All -- I'm looking for a panel mountable 1/8" / 3.5" stereo input jack (this is for plugging an iPod level device into a hi-fi project I'm working on). The problem that I'm facing is that the faceplate material for this amp is a full 1/8" thick aluminum. On *all* the jacks I've found so far, the bushing is just too damn short to poke all the way through and still let me get a couple of turns of the fastening nut onto the threading... I need a jack with a longer-than-standard bushing. Anybody?

I did something like this not too long ago. I couldn't find anything- most likely because, if the bushing is much longer, you can't reach the contacts with that little plug. I ended up using a dremel tool on the backside of the faceplate to set the rear of the jack into the faceplate enough to get a nut on the front side. You could recess the nut into the front also, but then you'd have to be neat.

Or drill a clearance hole for the width of the jack, mount the jack on a thin piece of metal, and mount the metal to the rear of the panel, centering the jack in the clearance hole. The jack will then appear slightly recessed in the panel.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Thanks Dude & Enzo for the ideas -- neither is particularly appealing, but if I get totally stuck there may be no choice.. Still with the fingers crossed!

I *think* I've found something that will work. A reader over on AX84 pointed this part out to me. The description in the Philco catalog indicates that it should be good with panel thickness of up to 3.5 mm (0.138"), so my 0.125" panel should work! I don't really need the locking functionality, but anyway, I'll give it a try and report back.
