  • Pioneer VSX-D608 Amp going into self protect mode...

Hi... Joined the forum to ask a question...
I have a Pioneer VSX-D608 amp that goes into self protect
at a bit over half volume. It's been doing this from day one.
The problem is present with no speakers.
I have tested it with just the FM radio, with no other components hooked up.
I don't need the volume that load but am curious as to what may be causing the problem.
It just bugs me that it has a problem...LOL...
Does anyone know what could cause this problem and what the average repair estimate
would be to have it repaired at a amp repair shop...
Thanks in advance for any info you can give me...

    Welcome to the forum.
Can you explain "goes into self protect"?
Are the speaker relays dropping out ( a click should be heard)
I do not see a 'Protect' on the display panel.

Not a simple piece of equipment, that's for sure.

      Hi Jazz...
      Sorry for the bad explanation...
Yes the relay clicks and the speakers go silent. After the speakers go silent all I have to do
is lower the volume a bit and wait 2 or 3 seconds and the relay will click again and the
speakers are back on line... Thanks for the Come-Back...

Stick your meter probes in each speaker output and see if there is any DC there before the unit goes into protect. We can possibly narrow down a particular channel that may be defective.

Does it have a cooling fan? If so does the fan ever come on? If it doesn't try to spin the fan somehow.

Thanks for the service manual pdf links Jazz P Bass...
Just finished looking at the complete service manual for my Pioneer VSX-D608.
Man this unit is pretty darn complicated as to what I saw.
So I came to the conclusion to leave it alone. The volume goes way more
then what I need before relay clicks and the speakers go silent.
As the old saying goes... (Leave well enough alone)...
Thanks to everyone who took the time to help me out with my problem...
