I was watching a TV show recently set during WWII that featured people on the British side (not at the top ranks of military) using a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and I started wondering if this detail was correct or an anachronism.
From what I've been able to discover, German company BASF produced some of the first successful magnetic tape in the 1930s, which was available to Germans, but generally not to anyone else.
So I think that showing characters using a reel-to-reel deck in the 1940s was probably historically incorrect and that it should have been a wire recorder, not a reel to reel.
