  • advice for enamel wire for winding inductors

    I was looking to buy a small amount of enamel wire for winding some air coils. This is to experiment with, and correct inductance values for the reactive load project.
    Here are the specs I was looking at:
    • 15 AWG
    • 8 oz. Solid Round Copper (99.9% pure)
    • 50 ft/15.24m
    • 200°C (392°F)
    • Base Coat - Modified Polyester Resin| Overcoat - Modified Amide Imide Resin

    My question is; is the temperature class appropriate, and is 50ft overkill?
    Realistically, how quickly can you go through a foot (or meter)?

    I don't know what you are doing, but in the past when I have needed crossover inductors, if i needed say a 2.7mH coil, I would buy one from Parts Express. They only came in even numbers, 1,2,3,4 etc. SO I'd buy a 3mH and unwind some of it. SImple and quick, and no tedious winding. Just some less tedious unwinding.

      As the textbook formula for air coil inductance only correctly applies to long cylindrical single layer coils and other coil shapes will require some trial and error I second Enzo's proposal.
