  • Fender Hotrod deluxe - C39 incorrect value in amp

    Hey folks,
This is a Hot Rod Deluxe that appears to be the 2nd version of the amp and is not labelled as the Deluxe III on the back. This version was produced in or about 2002. It appears Fender had changed the source of the +-15V brute force regulator circuit from 40Vac to 25Vac so that the 470ohm dropping resistors don't burn up.

ID:	962707 The issue with this amp is the typical leaky caps, however C39 that is the primary -15Vdc filter is stuffed with a1000uf as opposed to C42 on the +15Vdc side which is stuffed with
a 100uf 35V which is also correct according to the schematic & parts list.
C39 is bulged out & leaking. I'm fairly certain this is a faux pax and was just stuffed incorrectly. If nothing else in many amps this would cause the +-15V sources to decay unevenly at power down which on amps that have no muting will cause a rather nasty POP. Not an issue with this amp, tho.
I'm sure this in just an anomaly & I'm going to replace the cap with a 100uf as indicated by the schemo.
Even so, anyone experience this before? Thanx, glen

Then it is likely the 2001 version, the A revision. That should be in the original manual file.

ANy possibility this has been serviced before, and someone installed the two caps in swapped places? No one builds these by hands, the parts are all machine placed from pre-organized parts tapes.

I'd just call it a failed cap and install per schematic and move on.

      Hey Enzo,
Yes, of course I just replaced it. Just curious if anyone encountered this before as most techs have worked on hundreds of these amps. As I mentioned at the end I do believe this is just an anomaly as all caps are original. Back in the day although extremely rare you would find an incorrect machine stuffed part in a pcb. As a very young tech in the 70's you would consider yourself a genius for that.
      Thanx, g
