  • 1:1 transformer for DI box

    Hi.
I have come by some 1:1 Sowter transformers that were used in a Mic splitter box.
Can these be used to build some DI boxes? If so what would the drawbacks be if any.
Im used to seeing transformers used to make di boxes with turns ratios in the order of 11:1 or 12:1.

You won't get impedance matching (say from guitar to desk) and if the transformer has no centre tap you won't be able to go unbalanced to balanced. In effect, you're not much better off than without it. On the plus side it enables you to build a passive ground loop breaker by isolating the signal.

I recently laid in 3x Edcor 1:1 (10k) units for an amp splitter, and had run across this DI DIY https://wijproductions.com/2016/07/0...x-on-a-budget/

      maybe like what you're attempting?

An active buffer will probably be needed between the input and transformer primar, eg as per RG’s plan http://geofex.com as mic splitters may be lowish impedance, eg intended for 600ohms.

I’m thinking that if there was a CT, it may be best left open, unconnected.
Then the input of whatever it’s connected to determines the balance of the signal.
The same as the transformer output on an SM58 etc.
