  • What does this box do?

Picked this up at a thrift store today, mainly for the case & cord.

Would like to know what the circuit is in case it might be useful to me.

    Thanks for any help!

It looks similar to the circuit described here (https://www.electronics-notes.com/ar...rcuit-work.php) as "AC SCR circuit with gate phase control" but I don't think it is identical.

Looks like your typical phase control Triac dimmer BUT working only on the positive half wave, because it uses an SCR which is unidirectional.

But it can be converted to full wave,n which is more useful and practical.

It could be used as a temperature controller for a spare soldering iron for welding plastics. The iron will run at up to 50% power with the control.
