  • Gerald Weber RIP

I received an email yesterday that Gerald Weber died. He had suffered from cancer for two years.

He had published a bunch of books / videos on amplifier repair along with having his own Kendrick brand amplifier line.

It is sad that we lost him.

You live, you work, you create your workspace and you don't even realize how much time you have left after that.

I have both his books and they're all dog eared and tattered. He had a reputation for being a swindler but along the way he brought something to the game. Rest in peace Gerald.

I too have some Weber books and videos. He presented a good history of the early Fender amps and their characteristics. There was one video on YouTube where he gets the shock of his life. That was a lesson to me.... concentrate on your work... don't let the camera or others disturb you while working on a live amp!!
It's not just an amp, it's an adventure!

I didn't know he'd written two more after the books I have.

That was actually from one of his instructional videos, and was staged. Note he says "I was gonna do the little humor thing", and if you watch closely, what he's actually doing is pressing the tip contact on input jack to unground it, coupling noise into the amp. Clip.

RIP my friend. I have 4 of his books including one he autographed and sent me along with a payment he sent me for some work I did for him. We used to communicate a lot back in the early 90's via email. I ran some tests for him on some 5R4's vs 5V4's I had at the time. Still have that tube in one the "test" amp some 20+ yrs later. He also sent me somebody with one of his amps that needed a repair in a hurry and didnt have time to ship it back to him as they were leaving to do some shows in Europe. That person gave me a lot of work after that, about a half dozen Fender Supers. I have always been a big fan of his.

I love this because I do like the two books from him that I have and there are widely varying reports about his reputation on the web. It's good to hear about your positive experience. I spoke with him only once on the phone. He was quick to share experience and enthusiastic in a way that left no doubt about sincerity in my own experience. I still have some of his speakers an a box somewhere. The 10" models with the ferrite magnets he developed for his early Bassman based designs. They sound really good for it's worth.

Yeah, I saw a lot of BS about him over the years on the web. I found my experience dealing with him to be quite the opposite. Got into a lot of pissing matches on different forums with people years ago defending his rep.

That video where he gets shocked was one of those are we being played moments. I mean he either got a real zap or they staged it for fun. I like to think he got zapped and still put it in to warn others about the risks of working with electricity. Well I am glad he made it past that video! Sorry to hear of his passing.
                              RIP Gerald
