  • Scope suggestions for a n00b like me

Hello friends, I need a new scope.

I have a Hantek DSO5072P that used to work fine for a few years, but now has revealed itself as cheap china junk. I'm bummed because I liked it and it served my modest needs. I can't get any help or support for this thing, so....

I wanna get a new scope. I'm looking old school. This will only be used for guitar amp stuff, child's play as far as scopes go.

I've got my eye on a few Tektronix ebay listings in the $200-$300 range.

Any tips or ides on what I should really be looking for?

Hi, Greg, I've been using the Hantek 5072P for over five years with no issues. What's up with yours?

Amp repair requirements are very mild, as far as scopes go. Any modern DSO will do the job. Hand held, battery powered ones are pretty attractive these days: https://www.circuitspecialists.com/h...hard_case.html

Yeah mine turns on, boots up, and then freezes on a horizontal menu screen. No buttons do anything, it can't be reset, it's just frozen.

I just want one that isn't crap and has some support...or can be fixed.

I might take a chance on another one. Maybe. I like digital scopes. Maybe a different brand. I bet they're all the same though in that price range.

Seems like a software problem, no? Can you try updating the firmware?

I tried. It won't even speak to the computer. The computer will not recognize it. Seems like something in the software or firmware is corrupted.

I was hoping there's just some simple reset procedure but I can't find it. I can get to the reboot screen but none of the buttons work.

Thinking about my work on arcade games as well as synths and other keyboards, a stuck/collapsed push button can hang up some systems.

Yeah I tried every button, combos of buttons, rapid-fire button pushing, everything I could do to hopefully find something stuck. No luck. I took it apart and looked for cracked solders and stuff like that....no luck. I think this thing needs to be hacked and cracked somehow via code writing methods way above my pay grade.

So I just said screw it and bought another one. Lol. Am I crazy? Maybe. 200 bucks is 200 bucks, but I figure I'd give it another shot. I got the 5102P 100mhz version. All I need is for it to work. I'm not doing rocket surgery here. Fingers crossed.
