Heck, external pot? I had a couple different pot in a box in my shop just to plug in wherever I needed to control a signal level. Two jacks and a pot in a small box...voila.

"BTW, as there is an output HF transformer, what is the lowest signal generator frequency?"

Helmholtz, that would be approx. 5 Hz.

"I have the pot if you want it i'll mail it out, didn't measure it yet."

Mozz, I would gladly take that off your hands.
It's weird, because it WAS working fine.....

My el-cheapo meter in the garage says 343k one pot and 35k the other, so probably 250k/25k? Each pot only has 2 lugs and they are reversed from each other. I'm sure its the proper one. Send me a message.

          Thanks,

I was wondering how a HF transformer could transfer as low as 5Hz.
But now I found the manual and see that there is a low frequency OT as well as a HF OT.

Why not add a switchable *fixed* attenuator at the output?
            Say 10:1 or something.
Then you keep everything else as-is, simply move your"sweet spot" (currently the first fraction of pot movement) to a more comfortable one,say about mid scale rotation.

Instead of squinting and trying to adjust between 0>0.5 (on a 0-10 scale) . now you spread that to 0>5

            Worlds apart.

Hint: a 6k8 : 680 ohm divider will be about 10:1 and have about 600 ohm internal impedance, how´s that?

This will also attenuate pot scratch by 20dB

Thank you Juan, that sounds perfect. I will try it.
