  • My new (to me) Peavey VK212 distortion channel got really quiet

(sorry mods... I just realized I put this in the wrong area.)

Just got my first tube amp today and I was jamming for about 2 min (a loud 2 min) and the lead channel just quit working (I can still barely hear it when the volume is up, but just very faintly). The clean channel works perfectly. I'm new to tubes, but have done quite a bit of repair on SS amps, so I'd like to give it a go at fixing this thing myself. All the tubes are glowing, so I'm leaning toward a bad solder joint, but I wanted to check with some of you guys to see if there are any "know issues" I should know about while I have the thing torn apart.

Anyway, I'm excited to finally enter the world of tubes and any pointers on information to read about them would be cool.

    Thanks,
    Caveman

If you have serviced a bunch of SS amps, then think of this: if you had a SS amp with one channel working fine and the other channel inaudible, what would you do? Hopefully the same thing as in a tube amp. Isolate the problem.

stick a signal into the input and track it through the amp. Where does it disappear? Solder joint? Maybe, but where? There are hundreds of solder joints. Also on the list are bad relay contacts, some problem with V2 or its socket, bad panel switch, to name but a few.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
