  • Another 5F1 Newbie Here

I'm working on a Mojo 5F1 kit and I am going crazy with it. I have followed the Layout sheet that comes with it and wired the whole thing up. There are many detail omissions on it. When I turn it on and the tubes get going it make a loud steady hum. The tubes do light up but when I plug in a guitar chord there is absolutely no output. I have a major question concerning the AC chord. I have a separate ground for the green, I have the white going to the bottom lug of the fuse holder and the black going to bottom lug of the volume pot. Is this correct. The layout I have has colors for the wires of the PT only but not the AC Wire. The filament wires are shown as green as well. Please note that I have fixed the filament wires and they are nicely coiled.

Time to take some voltage measurements.
    I have attached Fenders schematic.
The layout has all the voltages marked.

Black is hot, it should go first to the "tip" of the fuse holder (not the side), then from the side of the fuse it goes to the switch (located on the back of your pot (not to be confused with the "lugs" of the pot), then the other side of the switch goes to the primary of transformer, then coming back out the other side of the primary to the white "neutral" wire in the cord. Green wire is bolted to chassis, as you said.

Have a look here, in the middle of the page, power supply hookups. He also has tips on jack wiring that are very useful, and other reference items - its worth a look.

I switched the AC leads and low and behold, the horrible hum went away. I was suspecting that from the beginning but didn't exactly know. Now I have to find out why the third Cap has no voltage and the first two have too much. I am finally starting to see a light at the end of this tunnel. Another question I have is that I noticed on the Layouts that bottom lug on the volume pot has an arrow pointing up. What exactly is this?

That is a stylized symbol for "switch". The black plastic item on the back of the volume pot is your on/off swicth. Incidentally, looking at your pictures, if that large orange cap next to the fuse holder is attached to either the hot or neutral lines, you should remove, it is not needed with a three-wire cord, and was possibly the source of the hum you experienced.

Regarding not getting DC at the third filter cap, check for ground on that cap, also check resistor to that cap.

The big orange drop is in the layout so I installed it. It is spliced to the Heaters at the top and grounded. It's still installed. I believe the hum was just coming from reversed polarities of the AC chord.

Ah, okay. Heater circuit. I had trouble telling what it was connected to. I wasn't sure that it wasn't on one of the lines.
