  • BF Deluxe new build troubleshooting

New to the forum- first post:
Built a BFDR. Normally have used the star ground (which I have read the woes and various novels that some of you have discussed on other "noise" threads). Seems to me the fenders are finicky about grounding and location. Anyway, had some nasty noise in the verb curcuit (well it got louder as pot turned up). Ripped out my pretty ground buss
and went to the more "locational" leo suggested ground scheme. Fixed that issue, but the strangest thing is now going on:
Regarding the 2nd / Abnormal channel- sounds good at low volumes except for a slight upper end light buzz. Verb works, vibe works. However, at volumes above 5, the sound cuts out completely when treble is turned up. Sounds like an envelope filter right before it cuts out: "oohwhop"!! Everyone laugh ----thats your que for my misery!!
I built this to schematic except the normal channel which is now a lovely marshalesque voiced beast (works and sound great). Have good DVMs, don't have a scope.
Help me obi wan, thanks tuneboy

Amp off, set the volume control to 1. Connect ohm meter between center terminal of pot and ground. It should show a very low resistance, less than 100 ohms. Slowly turn the volume control and the resistance should increase. As you get to 5 the resistance should be around 100K. At the point the volume cuts out the resistance will probably go to an open circuit. This means you have a bad pot and it should be replaced.

WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

Yep- more than one bad pot. Funny, I always test every part before placing on the board.
Lesson learned and the humble pie is quite tasty. Thanks

I usually treat all of my new pots with DeoxIT Gold G5 (formerly known as ProGold.) It has conditioners which prolong the life of the pots. (For old scratchy pots they have DeoxIT Red for cleaning the pots first.)

P.S. The Fender BF treble control is basically like a blend control between the signal coming through the treble cap and the signal coming up from the bass control. While the volume control is just like a- wait for it- volume control.
