About 12 months ago I posted a few questions about power supplies and transformers for a Princeton 5F2-A I planned to build. A number of you gave some useful advice and now here we are, 1 year on, and the amp is up and running – don’t know why it took so long, but the result is very pleasing.
I don’t play guitar myself; the amp was built for my son, and we tested it last weekend. We connected it to the only spare speaker we had - a 12” Celestion G12H Heritage Greenback – I know, hardly the normal partner for a Tweed amp! So, my son started playing, I cranked the volume up to half way and it sounded really good – then I switched out the negative feedback and we were getting get some nice crunchy tones. Then I cranked it all the way and my son grinned from ear to ear - sounded fantastic, in spite of the type of speaker and the fact that it was just lying on the bench. That grin made all the effort worthwhile!
So what’s the purpose of this post? To let you know how pleased I am with my first scratch build , and to ask for some input on speaker choice. The amp will go into a combo cabinet that will have a 10” speaker. I have been toying with the idea of an Eminence Legend Alnico1028K, but somehow I think the bottom end sound may be a bit lacking for what we want. We need something with good, firm, controllable bass, but not overpowering. I think alternatives could be the Eminence 1058, or maybe a Rajun Cajun.
Anyone out there have any experience of using any of these in a small Tweed amp, or any other amp? If so, your comments on their performance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mike
