  • Princeton 5F2-A finally up and running – what speaker?

About 12 months ago I posted a few questions about power supplies and transformers for a Princeton 5F2-A I planned to build. A number of you gave some useful advice and now here we are, 1 year on, and the amp is up and running – don’t know why it took so long, but the result is very pleasing.

I don’t play guitar myself; the amp was built for my son, and we tested it last weekend. We connected it to the only spare speaker we had - a 12” Celestion G12H Heritage Greenback – I know, hardly the normal partner for a Tweed amp! So, my son started playing, I cranked the volume up to half way and it sounded really good – then I switched out the negative feedback and we were getting get some nice crunchy tones. Then I cranked it all the way and my son grinned from ear to ear - sounded fantastic, in spite of the type of speaker and the fact that it was just lying on the bench. That grin made all the effort worthwhile!

So what’s the purpose of this post? To let you know how pleased I am with my first scratch build , and to ask for some input on speaker choice. The amp will go into a combo cabinet that will have a 10” speaker. I have been toying with the idea of an Eminence Legend Alnico1028K, but somehow I think the bottom end sound may be a bit lacking for what we want. We need something with good, firm, controllable bass, but not overpowering. I think alternatives could be the Eminence 1058, or maybe a Rajun Cajun.

Anyone out there have any experience of using any of these in a small Tweed amp, or any other amp? If so, your comments on their performance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mike

Yep I love the G12H heritage greenback. I got one in my 5G9 build - sounds amazing, and it sounds crazy when you stick a hot cake in front of the amp

I think the answer is already in your workroom.

Blow out the combo cab's dimensions and fit it for the Celestion!

Get a good vintage 60's era ceramic from Weber, the same speaker they recommend for a Princeton Reverb. Ceramic will give you more volume and punch. I prefer this circuit with a 12" ceramic 60's style.

Yes a 12" speaker in a small amp makes a huge difference even at low volumes where you'll appreciate the self accompaniment bass.

Hey Scott... did get any further with that other issue?

Thanks for the inputs everyone. I appreciate a 12” speaker would be better than a 10”, but I want to keep the cabinet dimensions sensible, so it will have to be a 10”. The last amp I built was intended to be a sensibly sized ‘grab and go’ unit, but I fitted a 12” speaker and dimensions increased accordingly. I ended up with a ‘transportable’ amp, but not one you could really call ‘portable’.

Scott, I like the look of the Weber 10” ceramics from their Vintage range; the price is affordable, but I would guess the shipping cost to England is going to be nearly as much as the speaker. I’ll send them an e-mail and ask, but I think I am going to be stuck with whatever I can source in the UK.

              What about a

              ?

They're ceramic, too - I think they speak with an Ipswich accent

10” Celestion Greenback – worth considering as its big brother sounded so good, but I was looking for something with more of an American accent. I might try an Eminence of some sort, at least they don’t cost too much on this side of the pond.
