lets drop it boys....all i wanted to know is where to find a specific type of wire. For all you know i was going to make necklaces out of it (I'm not but you get my point). Lets move on.
they used to have an assortment of cloth wire for rebuilding old school stuff.
Mojo sells good old two layered, push back wire and AES sells some cloth wire too.
I may have found something, see point 4 below, but ThermionicScott's harvesting old organs sounds like more fun:
1. +1 chat to Radio Daze, they know that we are mostly looking for a higher voltage rating and can advise.
2. Anyone in a tizzwazz with the EU regulations could source the ROHS compliant S-W809L-25, from people like AES / tubesandmore.com, as Bruce also pointed to. Of course it has modern insulation and the cotton outer braid is laquered so that it does not fray.
3. I tracked down that image that you posted to see if I could get any meta-data pointing to the supplier. That image sits on a hifi forum showing the remains of special-order of sleeve braid (to slide over) like I mentioned before. Many of the posters there actually say they slide shoe laces over modern cable!
4. I saw that braided cable with tracer not only inside a 50's Gibson but also on old motor cycles... now I have no idea of its rating, but this looks good: Vintage Indian . Com Motorcycle Parts (Powered by CubeCart). Look for 18 ga wire ( 10 foot piece cloth covered wire braided with single tracer. ) Maybe they have a data sheet on it.
As you can see they give guidelines for modern materials, PVC and Teflon, and if you use anything else it has to be tested.
Of course the supplier may have done the correct tests, but as a reference we have 1000v single core cable available here that has a PVC insulation wall thickness of 0.2mm. Part 8.9 says PVC should be 0.4mm wall thickness, so even though the voltage rating is fine, the wall thickness is not.
Basically the “shortcut” to CE compliance is to use modern materials that you know comply. Ultimately you can use any type of insulation but you have to be able to prove that it is fit for purpose, of course you would only have to prove that if someone put a claim against you.
Bradberry00, Sorry to hijack your thread, Raybob asked about this since he has or will supply amps to the EU.
If this was an amp for myself and I wanted to use cloth covered wire, if I could find wire rated at 600v I would use it without a second thought. My first amp I built with mains cable stripped out of a mains rated multi-core lead, it still going strong 8 years later……

Thats a good idea, do a google search for "static rope". its a non stretch rope that is normally white with a colour line in it.
