  • Storage Lockers being forced to vacate gear

I just got horrifying news early this evening: I have until Nov 15th to rescue/relocate all of my shop benches / shelving, test gear, Backline gear, darkroom gear, electronic lab-quality instrumentation, AC power analyzers, bridges, spare Tektronix 7000 series scope backup gear & plugins, etc

I will have to get my laptop powered up and find access to WiFi or hardline internet to get to photos of what I have to move, liquidate, give away, etc.

I need this decree right now while being holed up in a nursing home with a broken left leg and further complications from my injuries. Sigh……..

There will be free giveaways in this assualt to my decades of acquiring lab assets. My lockers are located in Gardena, CA.

Do have inventory lists of what is tucked away. More details to come.

    Oh my!
That's really bad timing for you.
So sorry to hear this news.
Are they closing the storage facility?

Yes, they are. No idea what is going to be done with the space. I am just one of probably hundreds of storage lockers there. I have a 14’ x 12’ space and. 12’ x 10’ space. The larger of the two has two areas of large shelving units with stacked shelving cubes providing a lot of shelving space. The larger of the two, which I will show photos of some great organization. The larger has what was once a framed structure that once had my double bed matress in place. Now that provided a ‘second floor’ within the locker

Getting all of the ‘shelving structures’ out means unloading all of the gear pulled out first, making moving everything out of that room a virtual nightmare!

Gotta create a plan as well as where I can go next with my assets.

Oh that's awful to hear Steven, and couldn't be worse timing. Certainly not something you need while you're recuperating.
Would Center Staging or any of the staff/clients do you any favours with temporary storage or assistance moving? If I were local I'd do whatever I could to help out.
I hope you get this sorted out with minimal stress.

Absolutely awful treatment. Any chance of pleading to their humane side given your predicment. Can't hurt to ask... After all someone has to be the last to leave I guess.

Hope you get it all worked out.

Horrible news. Not much I can do from SD except wish you the best.

Just got reply from Storage, Etc on the two locker sizes 14’ x 12’ and 10’ x 12’’. Wondering if I could pack all that I am keeping into a 10’ x 20’ space? Lot less $$ and might be able to pack it in while disposing of stuff that can’t be justified keeping a longer. But pulling this off while being unable to put any weight on my broken leg and also being moved from the nursing home in Van Nuys to Porter Ranch further North/East in San Fernando Valley, I presently am clueless there

Does that mean that they are not shutting down the whole facility?

                    Yes. This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is there any way these people can hear a plea and make a concession. If some of their effort includes maintaining a storage facility then can they possibly accomodate you in these difficult circumstances? After all... If they're still offering storage but changing their arrangement "they" still seem to be in control??? As such it seems to me they have some obligation to their customers during this change. You don't get anything if you don't ask.

Agree. If nothing else, I'd at least call them and explain your situation and that you just got mowed over by an idiot driver. They may have a way to cut you some slack.

No. That building alone is being shot down and all of us storage locker renters there DO have to pack up and leave with their treasures.

Yup…just horrible timing for your humble narrator here. The staff that operate this particular locker facility did mention some suitable lockers at a closer Storage, Etc facility to where I live (not counting my being run down by some driver seeing me too late, and where I am about to be relocated further out in San Fernando Valley to heal with daily care being provided. Got to be off the left leg entirely for the next 12 weeks, which is a lot of time away from the shop!

Also need to see what else is out there in the realm of storage space also closer to home (Glendale/Burbank border below San Fernando Blvd).

Sunday I move to a small Care Home in Granada Hills, and will dig thru my photos in the laptop to see what can be tossed/discarded and how to add to the main lockers shelving & bench infrastructure to ingest both lockers contents into one larger space. Whew! Lots to take in while being laid up. I know I’m gonna have to be present to coordinate a reliable work force, hopefully some staff from CenterStaging if they’re willing.
                        More to follow……Steven/nevetslab

Steve, I sent you a PM a couple weeks ago, but haven't hear back. I'm offering to send a used iPad, which you may find valuable as you rest and recover.

                              Dear Nevetslab.

Going through a somewhat similar situation since I sold my 19 room 5500 sq ft house chock full of stuff which of course I have to empty first.

I need not only storage space but HUGE *working* space, remember I make my own cabinets, chassis, speakers, transformers, PCB s, silkscreening and a ton more, all of which makes noise, smells of paint and contact cement, etc. so it is *hard* to find.

Just yesterday I got rejected by the 10th or 12th landlord or real estate agency, I had already reserved truck/handler time for next week, go figure..

So I am using an uncluttering method (all others failed) which *sounds* horrible, but hey .... it works.

It is called "The Swedish *DEATH* Cleaning Method"

Based on: 90-95% of the stuff I am holding is a Treasure for me, but junk or unappreciated to my kids or whoever inherits it or simply need to make room, so I take that decision myself.

Example: a Revox A77 recorder in mint state?
Nice for me, yet I have not turned it ON for 40 years or more.
Applies to most everything else I hold.

My kids have NO CLUE on its "value", no use for it, etc.
They can sell it for cents on the dollar (best case), sell it by the pound to recyclers (IF they will take it) or junk it in nearest dumpster.

Letīs save everybody time and effort, *I* dropped it in a dumpster myself.

So far I straight junked 60-70% of my "treasures", have not finished yet.

But now I can walk around, something impossible for the last 20 or 30 years.

So in a nutshell: roll up your sleeves, sharpen your axe, and mercilessly axe (most) everything off.
No kidding, no other option, there is no other way.

Consider yourself lucky if 10% stays.

Seriously: what worth/usefulness have, **in 2024**, 20 60īs Tektronix scopes on carts?
                              20 60īs Tube Testers?
And so on and on and on.

It will be relatively easy to find storage for the 10-20% (tops) that remains.

                              https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/hom...eath-cleaning/

This is the "declutter your home" version, where old family pictures, school stuff, sports prizes, marriage clothes, etc. hold *sentimental* value.
                              Old *Technical* stuff?
                              Not so much.

Boils down to sell/donate/junk with street corner junk bin being the preferred fastest method.

                              Selling on EBay?

WAY too slow, unreliable and incomplete, not impossible but ..................

Feel free to post a donation list for MEF members to pick from and send postage for delivery. (just a suggestion).
