  • Ampeg VT22 filter cap question

This is a stupid question but I'd rather be sure.

I have a VT22 that I picked up on the cheap. I just ordered some filter caps for it and I'm not used to working with mult-caps. The few that I have worked with were drop in replacements so not much thought process was necessary.

I ordered a 100x100@500V and a 50x50@500V as the Fliptops kit recommends. So what's the problem? These things have a common/single negative. How do I hook 'em up in series?

There's a schematic of the reworked caps here:

    http://www.geocities.com/flintstudio...Ampeg_Amp.html

So I need to get the 100x100 in series and the 50x50 in series.

Again, sorry for the stupid question but these things are tanks... and I don't wanna blow up my basement.

If you read the lower section of the instruction page that you linked to, it sez:
"You know, I've heard about some companies selling 'kits' of capacitors, but some of the parts can't be used, because they are all multi-cans of such values you would have to series connect the 2 caps in one can - quite an impossibility!"

What you need are separate 110@450v and separate 40@450v caps. Because the cap cans you purchased have common negatives you can't wire them in series.

Hmmm? I didn't see that at the bottom of the page. But, that's exactly what I was afraid of. I guess I'll be ordering some more caps.

Thanks for your help Bill. I really appreciate it.

Thanks Dave, I saw those at AES but I didn't think I would need them. I should've done my homework before I ordered.

I think I may go with some CDE snap in caps (380LX). They are much, much smaller and cheaper than multi caps and I can use the existing screws on the multi-caps to mount turret strips.
