  • Amp tune -up?

    Hi Folks,

I have inherited a late 50's Harmony H303, from my Wife's father. It was still in the original shipping box with shipping label dated 1958. I don't know much of anything about amps as I just started playing the guit last year.

I would like to give the old girl a "tune-up" or at least a multi point inspection, and that is the purpose of this post.

It sounds nice enough at mid level but does have a little more hum than I like. When I crank it up to 3/4 it gets pretty muddy/blended.

What can I check to see if it is as good as it can be? I have attached some pictures that I hope come through. And lastly is this a safe amp?

I think it would be safe to assume that the amp has had very little use.So I would think the tubes are still good.It undoubtedly needs to have any electrolytics replaced.A three prong power cord is also a necessity.Other than that I would leave it be and just enjoy the huge amount of dirt that amp will give up.These amps are very simple circuitwise and are basically one trick ponies, crank 'em and play. This amp has no PT,if you add up the prefix #'s on the tube it comes close to the 110 vac it was designed to use coming out of the wall.

it if was mine I'd want to check it out to see if the AC is isolated. Might not be judging from the tube designators (12,50,35 are heater voltage nos.) in which case I think it's not safe to use as is (at least by modern standards).

yah, that looks like one of those directly heated, transformerless types.
