  • moving to the USA

i just moved from the uk to the usa and brought with me my orange tiny terror (hand luggage was cheaper than shipping any of my other amps that now reside with my parents )

i was encouraged when i plugged it in over here to find that the transformers can work with the different power over here, however the amp it's self seems much quieter and the power tubes don't appear to be glowing...which is odd because the amp still drives? it still sounds great, it just seems much quieter...

in the uk i normally just run it through an orange 1x12 cab and over here i've tried it through a 4x10 fender tonemaster cab, a 1x12 jensen sepaker cab i put together, and my bass players ampeg 4x12's 1x15 and a horn (just for gigles)....

is this all just down to the lower voltage through the mains over here, or perhaps the cabs i'm running it through? or should i try switching valves/fuses out? or even replace the transformers?

any help would be appreciated, i just need a quick fix that's cheaper than shipping or acknowledgement that the power is just !

    Tiny Terror Manual

at the bottom of page 3 of the manual, it says:
"Please ensure your amplifier is switched to the correct voltage for your country..."

did you flip a switch somewhere on the back panel or inside the chassis? also, you need to change the mains fuse from a 4A to a 2A....sez so on the back panel

Yes there's a wee switch somewhere that needs flipped from 240 to 120. If you don't do that the amp will be useless as it's only getting half the voltage it needs. It's hard to make out from the manual, but it looks like it's in the right hand corner of the back panel, next to the mains inlet?

Also acorkos has it the wrong way round, if you're moving from the UK to the USA, the fuse needs to get bigger, not smaller.

It possible it doesn't have a switch.
Hope it has the 110 windings.
Attached is a shot of a tt's mains "area".
Notice what appear to be spare wires at the left of the IEC socket.
The usual solution to making an amp run on 110 (USA) or 220 (Europe)
is to provide 2 110 volt primary windings.
In parallel its a 110 volt transformer and in series its a 220 volt one.
This AD15 diagram shows it although the wire colour may be different.
Probably worth taking it to an electrical repair shop (shouldn't need to be a specialist) print out this thread and they should be able to seperate the windings and connect them in parallel.
Pull the valves/tubes out and take in the bare chassis to save a few bob !
They should be able to check for 6.3 volts on the fillament windings..
            to make sure its ok.

Hmm, the manual definitely mentions a selector switch, so maybe they left it out on later TTs to save money? Those dangling brown and yellow wires on OCD's photo are almost certainly part of the puzzle.

Might be worth giving Orange USA a call, the tech support phone number is on the Orange forum.
