  • need to access speakers on crate bass amp

i'm new to this forum, i stumbled across it while trying to re-hookup my speaker on my crate bx 100. i can plug in my bass to the input on the amp and the limiter light hits when i play, so i know the electronics on the amp is good and suspect its just the hookup to the speaker has come loose. the amp used to produce a fine sound, but started to crackle, then started to go in and out, and now won't produce at all.

i'd like to look for myself before i drop $40 on a bench fee at a repair shop, but it looks like this thing is built like a tank and im not sure where the access point is to get to the speaker hookup. any suggestions?

Is ther ANY sound at all coming out the speaker? Any background hum or noise? Does the speaker make a little pop or thump at turn on? If yes to any of those, the speaker is working.

Both the headphones jack and the external speaker jack will cut out the speaker. Do you get sound in headphones? In fact, does just plugging something in and out of the phones jack make the sound return? And likewise, plug something in and out of the extension speaker jack a couple times. Does that wake it up?

If ther is background sounds, plug a spare cord from line out to line in jacks. ANy help?

On that amp (and most bass combos I've come across) you should be able to pop the grill off (I think Crate might use velcro) and then remove the screws and pull the speaker out the front. I lay the amp on it's back to do this, 'cause 15s are heavy.

Remove the screws that hold on the grill on the front of the amp then remove the screws holding in the speaker.

Be careful to disconnect the wires from the speaker before you yank the speaker out.
