I actually found this on this site: http://music-electronics-forum.com/a...php/t-606.html

Interesting, because deep in the forum it points out that Solen caps do impart a different sound when used as filter caps. But it doesn't answer why they are better, just that they are different. I read enough to intrigue me but not enough to know why I wouldn't want to try it (other than trying to figure out how to fit them in my 5E3).

The one thing that intrigued me was the mention of quicker response. I love my 5E3's tone, but I prefer the response of the Hot Rod Deville I have. It has been said that cathode biasing tends to slow down the response, and also that a tube recto will do this. I was wondering if replacing the electrolytes would recover some of that speed? The response of the 5E3 vs the HRD is very subtle, but after a few weeks of playing the 5E3 I noticed that it lacked the immediate response I was accustomed to.
In the future I invented time travel.

K, have you tried any of the import TAD 22uF-500v caps from MOJO? I have not had a bad one in over 300 pcs.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out they are the same caps as the RUBY 22uF-500v caps or any other relabeled ones for that matter.
TAD used to distribute Ruby products in Europe and Ruby resold some TAD stuff in the US. Their elcos are mainly manufactured in Germany by Fischer und Tausche (F&T).

F&T supplies numerous "brands" on an OEM basis and is supposed to be distributed in the US by Electrocube Seacor.

Excellent quality, low prices - at least in the Euro zone.

I totally agree about the Sprague filter caps... way way too much money for very little, if anything, extra ... especially after you cut a new one open and have a peek.
There are Sprague elcos and Sprague Atom caps. Their standard lines are OK and quite compettively priced.

The Atom line is another story: they keep the old form factor and values but use modern small caps in a big box - sourced from United Chemicon or so it seems.

Here's a couple of pix from a thread on Doug Hoffman board:
