I really know for a fact that double posting is NOT always the user's fault. At least I would bet that people like Enzo are not clicking it twice. Also, I have seen it double post on me when I know not to click the reply button twice... Well sometimes user's will click that button over and over again to make sure that they get the post to go through. I am 100% positive that I have had double postings occur on me and I made sure not to click the reply twice. Positive on this.

The problem lies in cookies... I hate to say it but I have not had to re-log into the site in months and months. This is like having old cookies in the system and I hate saying but maybe we should be logging into the site on a more regular basis to create new cookies.

And I might just be saying that cuz I loved Cookie Monster so much!

Edit: Weird... I just clicked the Quick Reply button and it hung for a while... Then I clicked the stop button... It generated an error message saying that I have double posted or something... It looks like someone might be figuring this problem out since I have never seen that message before... Props goes out to who might be fixing this!!! Great job if that is what is going on.
When the going gets weird... The weird turn pro!

I tested that theory (See my post #4) Double clicking in the manner you describe may be an issue sometimes but it does not always cause a double post.

Same for me. The double posts are infrequent and when they do occur I go back and delete the second post. Maybe we see more double posts from Enzo because of his high level of activity. Could just be statistics.

Interesting that you mention this. I used to stay logged in all the time because of some option I chose. At that time when I clicked on a link in an email notification the browser opened the MEF page AND I was already logged in. Now, I must re-log in every time I go to the MEF site. This persists even though I check the “Remember me” box when I do log in. The site does auto fill my user name and my password but I do need to go through a process to log in each time. I have checked around in my Firefox preferences and security settings but I have not been able to figure out why I don’t stay logged. This behavior is the same on two different computers. Not a big issue for me but just wondering.

That message is not new. I have received the same message a few times. First time probably more than a year ago.

You can't double post by clicking twice. The forum software won't let you post anything more often that once every so often. That is sone of the failure clues. When I post, and it sits there spinning for a time, then it asks if I want to leave the page - YES - and up pops my post in a review window telling me I have to wait 28 more seconds before I can post "again." At that point I just click out of the thread and no double post.

Believe me, I am not double clicking or doing anything weird. In fact I studiously avoid doing anything while it spins just so as NOT to trigger anything.

I'll clear my cookies in a minute, but another piece of evidence is that it ONLY does this to me on THIS forum. And it only started happeneing right after I started using my newer computer with Windows 7. My old XP machine did its own funny stuff on this forum.

I found it amusing, that Steve Connor chided me over double posts a while back, and then soon after, I started seeing his posts doubling too.

Yep there are so many variables both at the individual user level and on the host side. There are other forums that also use the vBulletin software. They may be running different versions of vBulletin and may set it up with different options and features enabled. Every variable interacts to give you a final operating performance result. By the time the moderator gets one thing fixed there is always some other glitch ready to take its place. Overall the forum is a great resource and I appreciate all the work that the mods put in to keep it running. It’s good that members post the clues that can be used to help track down these little problems. I hope they are useful to the mods. However, if they can’t be fixed we will just work around them.

          Cheers,
          Tom

I only ever have this problem on this forum, not on any of the others I post in.
There is something buggy in the software here. I have made many double posts myself. But I do try to delete them or if that is not possible edit the text to read something like "duplicate message" to let the Powers That Be know that there is a problem.

Something really strange happens on my end nearly every time I post. I click on "post" to add what I've done to the thread and the forum send me a page that says "you can only post every 28 seconds. Try again in 15 seconds." Or something like that. If I wait and then press "post" after the time period I get a double post. So now I just ignore the page that tells me I can't post yet. I click post, the page pops up to tell me I can't, and I just go back to my settings page. My post is always there and didn't fail to post after all. This has become my regular MO.

EDIT: I do also get the "leave this page" thing sometimes. I just click "leave this page". My post still goes through.
"Take two placebos, works twice as well." Enzo

"Now get off my lawn with your silicooties and boom-chucka speakers and computers masquerading as amplifiers" Justin Thomas

"If you're not interested in opinions and the experience of others, why even start a thread?
You can't just expect consent." Helmholtz

Yes, that 28 second thing means it is trying to post a second one. If I see that I just reach up and click on the appropriate step in the strip of Forums, amplification, guitar amps, MT&R. If I see the 28 second thing, I kknow at least this time I beat the system.

The Forum was down for a while yesterday.
                  Maybe TBoy got it.
Todays posts seem to upload pretty fast.
