I get the occasional guy like that, but most folks accept that parts at the repair shop are not the cheapest place to buy.

We all have had someone bring in a small amp needing a jack. I charge the bench minimum, which might be $45 or even $30 for a 10 minute operation of a little thing. They beef. "WHAT??? $30? But it was only a jack!!!" And once again we explain, hey, you are paying me to be here, to know what to do, to know how to do it, and to have the facilities to do it, plus having the parts on hand so you can have your amp back and running in a day or less.

The guy who beefs me on tube prices, I ask him, so when you order them online for less, how good will they sound an hour from now during sound check? My expensive tubes are here in my hand now, your cheap ones will come in a couple days. Up to you. I wonder when he runs to 7/11 convenience store at 3AM for some emergency food item if he beefs the clerk because he can buy eggs cheaper elsewhere.

yeah well, any guy who spends $60 for a carton of Marlboros gets little sympathy from me on prices.

I thought he was running after Pickles, or Tampons, at 3 in the AM!

Pickles is still at home, she's the one who NEEDS the tampons.

Objection. If him and her are at home and awake at 3 am and she'd need tampons. Who'd go and buy them at the 7-11?

Do men actually run to 7-11 for tampons?

Are you married to women that are irresponsible enough to not keep tampons in stock? Mine doesn't have that problem.

There was one minor incident with chicken when she was pregnant- she wanted chicken, I brought home a really nice gourmet dinner. I ended up at Wendy's buying chicken and ate her gourmet dinner. I think that was a good arrangement.

As for tubes, you guys are making me nervous. I purchase only what I need to tinker and build amps for myself and friends. I suppose I should modify my test rig to burn them in and check them.

What about tube depot? Do you suppose they're just getting them from CE?

Sounds like you've got a good one. I bet you don't have to worry about the toilet seat either.

                        The Tampons were a joke!

The Tubes, I've decided I'm done with JJ Power tubes.
Every JJ Power Tube I've bought, which is not a huge number, has had an issue.
I do like the tone of JJs.
On the Other hand I've never had any issues with New Sensor Power tubes, Also not a huge number.
Some New Sensor, Like Sovtek have less Tone, But all seem to be extremely durable.

** I presume that TubeDepot sells enough tubes, that they would buy direct from JJ, just a guess.

Not that it directly relates to this thread (of course neither do tampons). But it seems to me that part of the reason for all the crappy tube complaints lately is that there are no major electronics firms making or commissioning them. If I'm not mistaken, the factories making tubes ARE the companies making tubes. And little else. With less and less available WRT NOS as a bar and the detachment of tube makers from electronics companies and corporations, tubes, as far as QC for construction and materials, may be becoming more like cloths pins than capacitors. If you get my meaning.

It's too bad that we no longer have RCA enforcing the standards that are required to call a tube a 6L6.

I totally agree. Look what the manufacturer do these days. Seems like everything you buy is built to gronk out after the warranty is barely over.

Maybe some tube manufacturers do the same and the worst of those tubes come for a "bargain" (at least they are called a bargain).
I haven't had any trouble with my JJ power tubes (mostly 6V6) so far. But there were so many JJ preamp tubes which were bad after a short period that I decided not to buy them anymore.
I'm currently satisfied with Tung Sol (power and preamp).

Officially giving up on JJ power tubes today.
Just finished another 6V6 amp and got 9.8 watts out a pair of the last new in the box JJ6V6s.
Pulled those out and put a new unmatched pair of those cheap $6.00 Russian 6P6S... bingo, 14.5 watts no changes other then slightly increase the bias voltage to cool them down a bit.

Got a hold of someone at CE Dist and they have agreed to take the remaining 10 pairs of JJ6V6s back, pay for the shipping back on a call tag and credit my account when received.
They say they will do that for all new and unused tubes, up to 90 days.

However the email stated clearly that there is no way for them to check for mechanical or microphonics so there is no warranty for that.... !!?? No warranty for crap tubes means no money from me, ever!

Ordered another 12 dozen of the 6V6EHs from New Sensor earlier this afternoon....which everyone I've tried hits my expected 14-16 watts and perfectly clean as viewed on my scope through an 8 ohm dummy load at 83Hz ..... DONE!
