I'm a total doofus. This whole time I was hitting the more drive button thinking it was the channel select switch. While I reading the test point voltages I noticed the were voltages for both more drive and for the drive channel. And thought, wait there's another switch somewhere? OMG it was right there! I feel so dumb!

Anyway, me thinks the diode might have fixed it. And the new reverb tank is in and sounds fine.

Thank you all for the help!

Side note: If i wanted to take the old reverb tank and use it as an effect I can plug stuff into. What specs do I need for a new output transformer? I figured I would just drive it with a simple amp. Like a 386 based one. I don't mind if it's not super clean.

I'm pretty sure you won't find a little transformer that goes in the tank anywhere. I'm not sure you ever addressed the question about the wires inside the tank? In this pic, the wires that go from the jack to the little transformer are what usually break.
(thanks Dr.Gonz for the pic) Even if the wire breaks right at the transformer, you can usually unwrap the tape and reconnect it.

I don't think that any of the Hot Rod series amps is old enough to have a transducer coil that isn't one with the built in pin connectors.

In my experience, 70% of the tank problems are broken wires at the push on connector, 20% broken wires at the RCA jack and 10% broken wire on the coil itself. Most tanks will already have the connector removed and the wires soldered directly to the two pins on the coil form.

The original tank is a mid impedance input tank designed to be driven by an opamp, but can be driven by a LM386 at lower gain settings. The output of the tank will work with any simple gain stage opamp or even a single transistor circuit like an LPB-1.
