  • how to terminate reverb transformer

Hi, I am wanting to use my tube driven reverb loop as a switchable boost by using a rca patch cord fron reverb send to return jacks.
I understand that the driver tube must see a load in absence of the reverb tank. Someone suggested installing an 8 ohm 10 watt resistor b/w the live and ground on the driver side. I assume this means from live to ground of the reverb send jack. Is this correct ?
Will this arraingement allow the circuit to be used as an effects loop as well or allow a patch in point (the return jack) for the signal comming from an attenuated power amp to blend parallel with the first amp. What other precautions should be taken to do such?

If you switch the reverb transformer AND tank out, the 220K at the tank output could terminate the reverb driver tube. That might be a lot of gain feeding the recovery section, so some attenuation might be in order. If you have to mod the reverb wiring too much to make a gain circuit sound good, you'll probably end up with a poor sounding reverb and a poor sounding distortion. As an option, try looking at the Matchless Chieftain circuit. The reverb and FX loop are fed from the same point and recover on both sides of the PI. That way, you still have the reverb in tact, and the FX loop can accomodate any drive you want to patch in for distortion. You don't see that PI configuration too often, but hey - it sounds good, you replace the 3.3M Fender resistor idea with an FX loop, and you're good to go. You also get the benefit of reverbing a clean signal and mixing back into the FX/dry signal.

      Terminate a reverb transformer?

Use a hammer is the easiest way, although you can achieve good results with a cold chisel, cutting torch, or even a plasma rifle.

Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

        Herzog

It does sound like an odd request, but it's been done in one form known as the Herzog. The Herzog is basically a Champ with a terminated output, then used as a Line Out. American Woman distortion. The reverb circuit could be modded the same way. We'd need more info to arrive at a better answer, but adding an FX loop has a little more appeal when it comes time to sell it. Severe tone mods on an established product appeal mostly to its builder.

          from OP.

I've simply soldered in a 10 ohm/10watt wirewound resistor b/w the live and ground of the reverb send jack then used a rca patch cord to loop send to recieve. The reverb level control governs how much signal gets through... works good and is switchable. This is a fender princeton reverb ll... not a classic! The boosted sound is better than the pull boost (useless... even when modded) feature on this amp.
          Thanks for the advice all.
