  • Swap op amp ? in traynor TS-25b

I've tyied playing guitar through an old ss (don't flame me!... I'm usually all about tubes) Traynor TS-25b and it gets a nice clean sound with some cool ratty distortion with the gain circuit switched in.
The single op amp in the preamp section is a TL 071. I have on hand a Burr Brown OPA2604 (dual !). Others claim a 604 has a more analogue/tube like sound with more 2nd harm. dist than the 701. I am aware of the difference in current draw and potential for unstibility compared to the 701 (not simply a drop in replacement) but might there be anything to gain sonically by going through the trouble of swapping? Do I have to use a dual to single adaptor or can I simply just use one half of the 2604 or perhaps go further and somehow utilize the dual to sonic benifit?
This amp will most likely be a/b/y-ed with my cleanish fender tube combo to add retro chrunch similar to the sound of my old silvertone twin twelve (which requires much more attention to restore... caps and all.)
    thanks.

    Replacements for a TL071 include LM741, OPA134 and NE5534P.

741 and 071 are both general purpose opamps, which often give grittier distortion.

OPA134 and NE5534P are audio opamps with lower noise than the old 741.

The simplest solution is to buy several and try each to see which one sounds best.

Install a socket in the Traynor's PCB. Use an 8 pin Dip component header to adapt any dual opamp or other chip to the pinout of the socket. You might want to try one of those power amp IC's (LM386?) that are popular in stomp boxes.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

I'm actually more interested in the opa2604 as it is consistantly cited as warm and responds much like a 12ax7 tube and I have 1/2 doz. on hand.

I'd like to just drop one in my circuit to judge for myself but I'm unsure of any special requirements in regards to periferial components (resistors, oscillation reducing caps etc.) that might be required to make it work in place of the single TL071. Although it seems straight foward enough : add a 0.1 ceramic disc cap across the power pins. Would I gain any benefit by using the 2nd half of the 2604 in parallel or stacking for increased headroom. How about stacking the 2604 onto the existing 701 for a combination of sound.
It has been said the 701 can be grainy when driven where the 2604 is smoother with wider bandwith and brighter overall.
        Any cautions?

You can't just drop a 2604 into the TL071 space or socket.
Just as you can't plug a 12AX7 tube into the EF86 socket. Both have 9 pins but that's where similarity ends.

Yes.. I get that I can't drop a dual into a single because of differing pinouts but like i've done for tubes... I can re-wire the socket. I guess what I am fishing for is that If I use 1/2 of the 2604...what to do with the other half ???
Leave it floating ? parallel it with the first half ?

Someone suggested "stacking" is this different than paralleling?

any I'm not sure if any of this is worthwhile as the sonic difference between op amps might not even be noticable in a guitar amp???
