I've tyied playing guitar through an old ss (don't flame me!... I'm usually all about tubes) Traynor TS-25b and it gets a nice clean sound with some cool ratty distortion with the gain circuit switched in.
The single op amp in the preamp section is a TL 071. I have on hand a Burr Brown OPA2604 (dual !). Others claim a 604 has a more analogue/tube like sound with more 2nd harm. dist than the 701. I am aware of the difference in current draw and potential for unstibility compared to the 701 (not simply a drop in replacement) but might there be anything to gain sonically by going through the trouble of swapping? Do I have to use a dual to single adaptor or can I simply just use one half of the 2604 or perhaps go further and somehow utilize the dual to sonic benifit?
This amp will most likely be a/b/y-ed with my cleanish fender tube combo to add retro chrunch similar to the sound of my old silvertone twin twelve (which requires much more attention to restore... caps and all.)
thanks.
