Just re-read some of the thread. For me, it usually stops with a Celestion Vintage 30. Good speaker, maybe not the best, but reliable, consistent, and bomb-proof. Might not help in your case... Good luck with the quest!

The V30 has a pronounced upper midrange. It's certainly not a mellow speaker. At least this is the perception because of how they sound out of the box. Real striking upper mids and aggressive. It took almost a year to break in the 8 ohm model in my combo but now it's much better with more balanced mid/treble and a smoother (not loose) bottom end. I really like it now. I'm going to grit my teeth if I ever need to replace it and break in a new one. I also have a pair of 16 ohm V30's in a 2x12 and though I don't use it much I would guess fourty cranked hours on them. They aren't even close to broken in yet.
I've seen video of guys breaking in speakers by attenuating wall AC and letting them just cook for a couple of hours. Reports are that it works but I've never tried it. If you live in suburbia you could end up with the authorities kicking in your door to see what the hell is going on. "Hello officer, I'm just breaking in a speaker. Why, did two hours of 60hZ at fifty watts disturb my neighbor???""Take two placebos, works twice as well." Enzo
"Now get off my lawn with your silicooties and boom-chucka speakers and computers masquerading as amplifiers" Justin Thomas
"If you're not interested in opinions and the experience of others, why even start a thread?
You can't just expect consent." Helmholtz

That's why I buy clean USED speakers generally! I've done pretty well that way, no lemons I can think of. I haven't tried the AC break-in thing yet... I'm sure I will. I have access to a shop space in the relative middle of nowhere... V-30s aren't for everyone, but I've been pounding on a pair of them with 100 watts for some time and they show no signs of giving it up. I probably have them in 4 or 5 different amps. Doubt they would help the OP. De-rail over!Don't believe everything you think. Beware of Rottweiler. Search engines are free.

I think the point of breaking in a speaker is to diminish the stiffness in the cone. You will probably get that when you crank up your amp really loud for a considerable time. But yes, the neighbour thing will kick in and you'd have to put in a lot of time. Back to my original post, the extra bass frequencies -100 Hertz will make the speaker work harder and will force the cone to losen up. I also turn the speaker cone to the floor. That helps too. Advantage is that the high frequencies won't be so prominent. So.. i still hold on to the hifi solution, with the bass cranked up and bob marley. Don't think Bob ever offended any neighbour..

very funny. even funnier cause i just broke in a cannabis rex speaker today to go with my Traynor amp. I ignored the munchies cause i was swapping cabs as well as soldering. Need to be sober for soldering or at least not smoking C. Some guy on the eminence website referred to the speakers as ' the non smoking variety', so if they ever lose the spark i can't even sm..

Hello all, i am new here and this is my first post. One of the easiest ways i have found to tame the highs is to use a 12AY7 in the first stage and if more taming is needed keep adding them. Very warm tubes. You will lose some volume, but if you are not turning your amp wide open anyway you can just turn it up and not bleed that signal to ground.
