  • Volume loss after PT & Choke change

    Hi There,
Just throwing this out here in case anyone has any wisdom they can share.
About three months ago I fitted a Mercury Magnetics output transformer to my Marshall DSL50.
To say I was impressed with the upgrade would be an understatement.
So I then decided to go the whole nine yards and get the Power Tranny and choke as well.
Straight after fitting these two items, the tone is simply incredible.
However, I feel as though I have definitely lost some volume.
Its like the amp is now running at 25 or 30 watts and reaches its limit too early.

I have measured the voltage at pin 3 of the power tube sockets and get a solid 483v on each socket.
Ive also biased down to 35ma.
Admittedly, prior to the PT and Choke change I did have the bias set too high so I am going to try with a new set of tubes but in the mean time I'm asking if anyone can suggest any other reason why this issue may have occurred.
    Many Thanks

What was the plate voltage at pin 3 with the old PT? I very much doubt the choke is having significant influence regarding this issue.

      Hiya,
      Thanks so much for replying.
Annoyingly I didnt take a measurement with the old PT. It was the original dagnall and two of the spade terminals snapped of the windings virtually as soon as I touched them. They were held on with a sliver of metal about 3mm wide and after years of heat transfer the metal had become so weak it was like butter! Not a good design IMO.
Nice to know you dont think its the choke.
To be honest at low to moderate volume, the tone and response is just fantastic.
I really cant see myself changing this amp for anything as long as I can sort this issue out.
Just to ellaborate, before the PT & Choke swap if I had the master at about 4 to 4.5 it felt like the speakers would explode with anymore power. IE-Plenty!
Now I get up to 5 on the volume and it feels like theres nowhere left to go, like the tubes have run out of steam or as if Iam just running at 25 or 30 watts.

Connect a true RMS AC volmeter accross the OT secondaries, play, determine an average voltage, then divide by speaker load in ohms. What do you get?

Then set for cleanest tone & repeat.

If the new PT as given you a drop in B+ the amp might be making a little less power, you might just need to revise your pot settings. Forget the numbers, set them by ear, not by looking at them & see if you can still dial in the headroom you need.

          Best advice ever!
          Thanks so much.
I dismantled the whole amp again today just to double check everything was seated and soldered properly.
I resoldered the choke connections as I wasnt totally happy with them first time round. Think I was a bit scared of damaging the board!
Anyways, all back together and biased at 28mV.
Went to rehearsal just with my amp and a custom 2x12.
I was starting to drown out the drummer with the volume just at 3!
No loss of tone, or oomph! Just pure awesomeness
