On older amps with AC power switches mounted on the back of a volume control, is it generally of significant benefit, assuming that all other hum-reduction steps have been taken, to relocate the power switch to a dedicated toggle switch elsewhere on the chassis?

It can be a benefit IF it is one of the higher contributors to the overall amp hum. However, sometimes other hum producing portions of the amp swamp out the hum picked up by the close proximity of the volume pot and power switch. A simple test for your specific amp is to disconnect the AC switch wires, connect them together (Electrically insulated of course) and place them where they would be routed to your new proposed switch. Then power the amp up and determine if you got the significant improvement you expected.

I wonder if the hum reduction is due to the switch being removed from the control, or the AC wiring moving away from the control wires. You might get the same hum reduction by redrewssing the wires.Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

"I happen to have an original 1955 Stratocaster! The neck and body have been replaced with top quality Warmoth parts, I upgraded the hardware and put in custom, hand wound pickups. It's fabulous. There's nothing like that vintage tone or owning an original." - Chuck H
